Open Source Projects for Cloud on Rise, According to Black Duck Software Analysis

Open Source Projects for Cloud on Rise, According to Black Duck Software Analysis

Growth in Cloud Infrastructure Enables New Enterprise Application Development

WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 23, 2010 -- Open source projects aimed at enabling enterprise IT application development for cloud computing are proliferating, according to an analysis by Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software.

Cloud computing frameworks and platforms designed to support integration with cloud services, scalability in private and public clouds, and manage and store cloud data are growing rapidly and include well-known projects such as Hadoop, Eucalyptus, Hyperic, deltaCloud, Open Stack and OpenECP.

"In the wake of the financial crisis of the past 18-24 months and as enterprise IT application developers re-architect applications for cloud environments, they are turning to open source software for its low cost, availability and breadth of possible solutions," said Melinda-Carol Ballou, Program Director, Application Life-Cycle Management & Executive Strategies, IDC. "Open source's low barriers to entry and abundance offer significant time-to-market advantages and make it an emerging and important element of cloud development strategies for enterprise developers. At the same time, organizations must put in effective open source assessment and management capabilities to leverage it as part of a complex software sourcing strategy for the cloud and for other environments."

Black Duck analyzed its KnowledgeBase of open source project information to uncover trends in open source projects for cloud computing. Although many open source projects useful for cloud development and deployment don't specifically reference cloud, Black Duck found almost 400 projects that did. The analysis shows a 70% percent growth from 2008 to 2009 in projects specifically associated with cloud computing. These cloud-specific open source projects account for nearly 50 million lines of code. Cloud environments referenced by the projects show Amazon as the leading environment, followed by Microsoft's Azure, Google Apps Engine, and Force.com. To see a chart and list of OSS cloud projects data referenced in this release, please visit http://www.blackducksoftware.com/oss/projects/#cloud

"When we began the analysis we expected to find projects focused on security, privacy, and management," said Peter Vescuso, Executive Vice President, Black Duck Software. "The variety of projects that self-identify as 'cloud' is much broader in scope, reflecting the sophistication of the cloud application ecosystem and confirming the importance of OSS cloud software developed to support the needs of enterprise IT."

Black Duck spiders the Internet for open source code, collecting information about projects and code into the Black Duck KnowledgeBase, which contains information on more than 250,000 open source projects from more than 4,500 unique websites.

Black Duck Software Announces Support for Open Source Industry Initiatives

Participation in FOSSBazaar SPDXTM Working Group, Support for Linux Foundation Open Compliance Program Signal Support for OSS Community

WALTHAM, Mass., August 10, 2010 – Black Duck Software (www.blackducksoftware.com), the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software, today announced its support for two compliance initiatives being spearheaded by the Linux Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux.

Through participation in the Linux Foundation’s FOSSBazaar SPDX working group, Black Duck is contributing resources to develop a specification for exchanging software license information. Phil Odence, Vice President of Business Development for Black Duck, co-chairs the SPDX committee. “The SPDX group’s objective is to create a set of data exchange standards that will enable companies and organizations to share license and component information for software packages,” says Odence. “This industry-wide initiative has support from more than 20 companies and organizations which are committing time and effort to create an open source specification that will simplify license and policy compliance.” Black Duck is committed to supporting the SPDX standard and technical specification to ensure its products accept and produce SPDX format information.

Black Duck also announced its support for the Linux Foundation’s Open Compliance Program, a six-pronged initiative which includes the SPDX effort as well as tools, training, consulting and a self-assessment checklist to help companies comply with open source licenses. In addition to supporting SPDX, the company provided content for the Program’s training curriculum. More information about the Open Compliance Program can be found at www.linuxfoundation.org.

“Our work with the Linux Foundation and participation in the SPDX working group demonstrates our commitment to the open source community,” said Odence. “Complying with the requirements of the more than 1,900 open source licenses Black Duck has identified can be challenging, but these initiatives make license compliance a simpler effort for all.”

In a related effort, Black Duck in July announced a certification program for legal professionals advising clients on open source licensing in the context of software M&A engagements. The Legal Certification program, open to IP and M&A attorneys with open source experience, introduces participants to Black Duck code assessment services and tools and provides guidelines for developing code assessment reports.
Black Duck Announces SAP's Selection of Its Black Duck Suite To Help Developers Manage Increasing Use of Open Source Software

Black Duck Announces SAP's Selection of Its Black Duck Suite To Help Developers Manage Increasing use of Open Source Software

Planned worldwide implementation to automate management and use of open source software; validate and improve developer efficiency

WALTHAM, Mass., July 27, 2010 - Black Duck Software, a leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software, today announced that SAP (NYSE: SAP) has selected to implement the Black Duck™ Suite. The comprehensive suite provides a platform for managing the use of open source software in a multi-source development process. It will help development teams at SAP improve productivity by further automating the company’s open source approval processes. SAP is the world's leading provider of business software(*).

SAP, which previously used complex, time-consuming and partly manual processes for handling open source approvals and the legal compliance aspects of open source use, sought a scalable, enterprise-strength platform to further automate the management, compliance, and integration of open source software into its development life cycle. After researching available tools and platforms, SAP chose the Black Duck Suite to support SAP developers worldwide with the suite’s automated, developer-oriented, multi-function platform, which supports scanning, early detection and management of open source used in software development.

“When we established the open source approval process at SAP in 2001, we assumed we’d receive only a few open source requests per month,” said Francis Ip, head of SAP Global Technology Legal Compliance. “However, with the continuously increasing importance of open source globally and SAP’s recent strategic change towards systematically utilizing benefits that come with open source, it was necessary for us to scale our open source process through further automation. We conducted an exhaustive search of applications on the market, and the Black Duck Suite was the best solution we tested. The Black Duck Suite will help us further automate and scale our open source process in order to support our open source strategy.”

“Using the Black Duck Suite will help SAP developers reduce the amount of code that needs to be developed while increasing the velocity of development,” said Peter Vescuso, executive vice president, Black Duck Software. “Automating the use and management of open source software also will yield the benefits of compliance with software license obligations, reducing risk and improving developer efficiency.”
Audience:	Project Managers, Outsourcing Managers, Legal, R&D and IT

Cost: No charge

Registration: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/538179353

This webinar addresses the following key questions:

What are the legal and technical requirements for using FOSS in outsourcing projects?

How can FOSS advantages be fully leveraged?

How can I establish an effective FOSS management strategy for reducing risk while leveraging the time and cost-saving benefits in complex outsourcing projects?

This is the second in a series of three webinars Black Duck is presenting with strategic partners, Bird & Bird and BearingPoint.
Black Duck Software Offers Technical Due-Diligence - Best Practices for Streamlining Mergers and Acquisitions

Black Duck Software Offers Technical Due-Diligence Best Practices for Streamlining Mergers and Acquisitions

Enterprise M&A Activity Surges, Spurring Demand for Open Source Software Due Diligence Processes for Qualifying and Accelerating Deals

WALTHAM, Mass., June 21, 2010 – Black Duck Software (www.blackducksoftware.com), the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software, today announced best practices guidelines for both acquirers and acquisition prospects navigating the M&A process.

According to the 451 Group, technology sector M&A spending in Q2 2010 is running one-third higher than in Q1 and on track to register the highest quarterly spending total for technology M&A since the start of the credit crisis. The 451 Group credits big deals as the main driver for 2010 M&A spending growth, with 17 deals valued at $1 billion announced so far this year.

“The recent 451 Group analysis supports what we’ve seen with our own customers – cash rich enterprises are hungry for opportunities to grow, diversify and innovate by acquisition,” said Peter Vescuso, Black Duck’s executive vice president of marketing and business development. “Mergers and acquisitions are highly complex business transactions that can be further complicated and delayed due to software intellectual property rights, export compliance and security issues, that can come to light in the midst of a deal. Companies that apply our best practices gain transparency into their software assets so they can avoid these pitfalls and focus on other aspects of navigating M&A deals.”

Black Duck Software has performed code assessment reviews in over $40 billion of M&A transactions, and M&A business for Black Duck grew by 100 percent in Q1 2010 compared to the same time last year.

The following best practices have been developed specifically to aid companies considering or entering into M&A deals:

‘Know Your Code’ Applies to Acquirers and Acquisition Prospects

As an acquirer, you need to know that the software you are purchasing is licensed correctly and that any proprietary intellectual property is unencumbered. You need to know of any remediation that will need to take place before you can maximize revenue from this acquisition.

As an acquisition prospect, you need to know what’s in your code base and demonstrate compliance with the associated license obligations. Having policies and processes in place to manage third party code will build confidence in the acquirer, help the deal progress smoothly and avoid findings that could devalue your assets.

Audit Code Before an Acquisition

As an acquirer, you need to conduct comprehensive code audits that assure accurate valuation of software assets and mitigate the risk of unanticipated licensing, compliance, security or IP issues that could undermine future value.

As an acquisition prospect, be pro-active and thoroughly review your code in advance of a transaction. This lets you avoid surprises that might delay/derail the process or affect your valuation.

Use Automation Technology for Code Analysis

As an acquirer, especially those who conduct numerous acquisitions, you need to extend your due-diligence process to incorporate automated software code analysis as a part of your standard process. This will enable you to accurately and comprehensively inventory code origins and license obligations to uncover conflicts and compliance issues and develop a remediation strategy.

As an acquisition prospect, make automated analysis an integrated part of your software development process. Start with a policy for open source use and implement tools and processes to confirm compliance with the policy. This way you’ll already have tools and processes in place that can quickly produce the information needed during an acquisition event as well as demonstrate best practices to potential acquirers, reducing their perception of risk and increasing their perception of value.

Dedicate Resources for Analysis and Remediation

For both acquirers and acquisition prospects, conducting automated code assessment is the first step. Once the results are in, leave it to code analysis and remediation experts to guide you in the resolution of any intellectual IP, export compliance, security or other issues that arise during the code evaluation process. Dedicating resources in this way will provide the best results and allow you to focus on other aspects of the acquisition process.

Additional Black Duck M&A Resources – Register for our June 22nd webinar
Medical Practice Management, Electronic Health Records Applications Lead Open Source Software Projects for Health Care, Accordin

Medical Practice Management, Electronic Health Records Applications Lead Open Source Software Projects for Health Care, According to Black Duck Software Analysis

Black Duck Joins OpenHealthTools.org, OSS Health-IT Community

WALTHAM, Mass., May 11, 2010 - A year of significant growth in the number of open source projects established to develop health care applications was led by practice management and electronic records management projects, according to an analysis by Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software.

Projects such as CARE2X, aimed at increasing integration and interoperability between multiple incompatible health care information systems within an institution, and OpenVista, the open-source version of VistA, top the list of active health care OSS projects in the Black Duck KnowledgeBase, which counts nearly 900 open source software (OSS) projects with a health care focus. The analysis shows a 13 percent growth in the number of projects, with a 38 percent growth in lines of code from 2009 numbers. Projected development costs for the projects -- which combined include over 124 million lines of code -- have grown to approximately $8 billion USD, up from 2009's estimate of $6B, representing 45,000 staff-years of development effort.

Black Duck also announced its membership in Open Health Tools (http://openhealthtools.org), an open source community creating an ecosystem of OSS developers and health care professionals dedicated to developing a health interoperability framework, including tools and reference applications. The Open Health Tools forge hosts Hitex, the Health Information Text Extraction system (https://hitex.projects.openhealthtools.org), one of the largest OSS health care projects tracked by Black Duck. Hitex, which is built on top of the GATE framework, provides analysis pipelines and modules to extract health information from clinical documents.

"The Open Health Tools community welcomes new member Black Duck Software," said Skip McGaughey, Executive Director, OpenHealthTools.org. "Black Duck's development tools address issues that create barriers to open source adoption. In combination with OHT community tools and reference applications, designed to promote interoperability in health care IT, Black Duck's support will increase the pace at which OHT projects evolve and are adopted by health care organizations."

"In addition to improving access to data and bringing innovation to health care IT, the top projects in the Black Duck analysis offer faster time-to-solution and cost-avoidance to an industry facing sweeping reform at the federal level," said Peter Vescuso, Executive Vice President, Black Duck Software. "The increased focus we see on interoperability as a project goal in health care reflects trends in the broader open source community, which supports the increasing role that open source projects can play in advancing the state of health care IT."

Black Duck Software Survey Reveals Top Technology Trends, Challenges and Barriers to Open Source Software Use Affecting Enterpri

Black Duck Software Survey Reveals Top Technology Trends, Challenges and Barriers to Open Source Software Use Affecting Enterprise Development Organizations

Developers Cite Cloud Computing and Mobility as Top Disruptors; Greater Productivity Demands and Contributing Back to Open Source Software Projects Cited as Top Challenges

WALTHAM, Mass., May 4, 2010 - Software developers from leading global enterprises are looking to cloud computing and mobility as platforms for innovation while facing increased pressure to produce more with fewer resources. Meanwhile, developers are increasing usage of open source software (OSS) to improve efficiencies and accelerate development cycles, but barriers to greater usage of OSS across the enterprise persist. Even among early adopters, few enterprises are fully leveraging the potential time and cost savings of broader use of OSS.

These are the results of a recent survey of development executives from fourteen leading global enterprises conducted by Black Duck Software (www.blackducksoftware.com), the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software. Enterprises participating in the survey represent leaders in a range of industries, including semi-conductor, financial services, business software, mobile, healthcare, media and entertainment and data storage.

Cloud Computing, Virtualization and Mobile Spur Application Development

When asked about the top technology trends affecting application development, survey participants reported innovations in cloud computing/virtualization and mobile as the most disruptive technologies currently influencing development projects across the enterprise. Respondents also cited distributed development/collaboration, Agile development methods and multi-company collaboration on OSS projects as top trends impacting development projects.

Developers Doing More with Less

While cloud computing, mobile and distributed development trends are ramping up the intensity and pace of application development, development managers said that they are under pressure to increase the number of products and releases per year with fewer resources and under tighter budget restrictions. Respondents said that contributing back to OSS projects is another top challenge: they want and need to contribute back, but the lack of formal policies within the enterprise for managing OSS contributions remains the top barrier to participation.

Collaboration and sharing source code globally across distributed teams in addition to processes for enabling code standardization and re-use across the enterprise also were cited as top application development challenges.

OSS Project Contribution Barriers Impeding Broader Use

The fourteen global enterprises participating in the survey are early adopters and leaders in leveraging OSS for improving the efficiency of the software development process; nonetheless, virtually every enterprise said that they are only partially harnessing the potential of OSS. When asked why, respondents cited the lack of a more comprehensive policy and strategy for OSS as the top barrier. Developers responding to this question reiterated the challenges of contributing back to OSS projects as another major barrier to greater use of OSS. As a result -- respondents reported -- developer changes are often not integrated into the mainstream code base, reducing the development team's ability to rely on the OSS projects they're using for the long term.

Although not among the top impediments to greater use of OSS, respondents cited executive buy in/support, concerns about the cost and complexity of managing OSS use, and the perceived risk of OSS as additional challenges.

"These survey results show that the top global enterprises understand the value of using open source software in the application development process, but barriers to broader adoption persist," said Jim Berets, vice president of product management at Black Duck Software. "Most of these barriers can be traced to the lack of an enterprise-wide open source strategy and clear policies and procedures for managing its use. The good news is these barriers appear to be falling rapidly as development organizations realize the benefits of open source and take proactive steps to adopt strategies, policies and solutions for managing its use across the global enterprise."

“Multi-source development with open-source software (OSS) has become virtually ubiquitous among mainstream IT organizations. Whether they know it or not, 80 percent or more of Global 2000 IT organizations use open source technologies today,” said Tim Yeaton, president and CEO, Black Duck Software. “Strategic use of open source offers savvy development organizations opportunities to speed time-to-solution and increase business value while reducing costs.”

The vendors evaluated by Gartner in this report show how they are delivering next-generation capabilities in several key areas of the application development life cycle. Black Duck was one of five companies identified as a “Cool Vendor” in the application development space.
About Gartner's Cool Vendors Selection Process
Gartner disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to this research, including any warranties of merchantability or fitness of a particular purpose.

Gartner defines a cool vendor as a company that offers technologies or solutions that are: Innovative, enable users to do things they couldn't do before; Impactful, have, or will have, business impact (not just technology for the sake of technology); Intriguing, have caught Gartner's interest or curiosity in approximately the past six months.
Android Wins Over Open Source Mobile Developers, Growing 3x Faster Than iPhone, According to Black Duck Software Analysis

Android Wins Over Open Source Mobile Developers, Growing 3x Faster Than iPhone, According to Black Duck Software Analysis

39% Year-Over-Year Increase in Number of New OSS Projects for Mobile Platforms

WALTHAM, Mass., March 16, 2010 - While the world economy suffered in 2009, mobile open source projects experienced robust growth, according to an analysis by Black Duck Software that reflects the relative health of the mobile industry and growing interest in applications developed on open source software (OSS) platforms. Black Duck Software is the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software. Black Duck's KnowledgeBase -- the industry's most comprehensive database of open source project information -- was used to analyze 2009 trends in mobile open source development.

Some 903 new open source projects for the mobile space were created in 2009 bringing the total to over 3,200 projects, a 39 percent increase over 2008. Black Duck attributes the steady growth to the strength of smartphone sales and the volume of open source platforms. Market research firm comScore shows an 18 percent rise in the number of smartphones in Q4 2009.

Additionally 224 new projects specifically related to Android were launched in 2009, almost three times the number targeted for the iPhone, which at 76 is the second-fastest growing platform. Windows Mobile, which like the iPhone is not based on an open-source software platform, was third with 75 new projects, reflecting the large number of Windows application developers in the market.

The iPhone, which has spurred creativity among OSS application, utility and tools developers, appears to be benefitting the Android platform as well. Projects available first on the iPhone increasingly are being ported to the Android platform. Examples include Kwaak3, a popular OSS 3D shooter game, and Jelly SMS, an OSS text messaging app, as well as NIN:access -- Nine Inch Nails' first official iPhone app -- and fBook -- an iPhone Facebook app. Although NIN:access and fBook are not OSS projects, they exemplify the iPhone-to-Android trend. Projects developed for Android also are finding their way to iPhone, e.g. the game Mystique.

Black Duck reviewed hundreds of thousands of open source projects collected from 4,600 Internet sites to compile its list of open source projects targeting mobile platforms. Among the highlights of the analysis:

New OSS projects for mobile totaled 3,207, a 39% increase compared to new projects created in 2008.

New projects for Android represented 25% of all new OSS mobile projects and exceeded the number of new projects for the next six platforms combined.

Forty six percent of the new projects were for one of the major platforms - Palm, iPhone, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android, RIM/BlackBerry, or Maemo.

2009 saw an 85% increase over 2008 in the number of lines of code written for mobile OSS projects.

New Total OSS
Projects Mobile Growth
OSS Projects Associated with a Platform 2009 Projects '08-'09
----------------------------------------- ---------- ---------- ---------
Android 224 357 168%
iPhone 76 252 43%
Windows Mobile 75 248 43%
Symbian 17 140 14%
Palm 10 527 2%
Maemo 9 27 50%
BlackBerry 4 39 11%
---------- ---------- ---------
Sub Total 415 1590 35%
---------- ---------- ---------
Other OSS Mobile Projects 488 1617 43%
---------- ---------- ---------
Total 903 3207 39%
---------- ---------- ---------

"Strong growth in open source mobile projects reflects the sustained strength of the smart phone market, and Android's accelerating growth in 2009 indicates that mobile application developers are drawn to open source platforms that have broad adoption by multiple handset manufacturers and mobile operators," said Peter Vescuso, executive vice president, marketing and business development, Black Duck Software. "Although RIM continues to dominate the smartphone market and Symbian accounts for some 49 percent of worldwide smartphone operating systems, Android's open source platform appears to be attracting more open source development among mobile application developers."

Black Duck Boosts Suite Usability and Performance with Enhancements to Protex

Black Duck Boosts Suite Usability and Performance with Enhancements to Protex

Protex 5.1 offers improved search and performance for large enterprise code sets, builds on expanded KnowledgeBase

WALTHAM, Mass., February 10, 2010 - Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software, today announced enhancements to Protex, the code analysis engine that is a core component of the Black Duck Suite, a comprehensive platform for managing the use of open source in a multi-source development process.

Protex version 5.1, available immediately, provides faster, more precise code search capability with significant performance boosts. Enhancements include:

Faster- for enterprise users running code scans and analysis on very large data sets, performance enhancements will speed searches on computer-intensive activities - such as calculating a Bill of Materials for a complex software application - by up to a factor of five.

Improved search - The Protex 5.1 Advanced Search function, based on Lucene 2.9, offers the ability to use leading wildcard characters and allows improved query structure. Named searches can now be 250 characters in length.

KnowledgeBase enhancements to the Suite include 10,000 new projects, 600 new sites and over 300 new open source licenses. This version also shows release dates for projects allowing users to more easily match their code with a specific release. With the most comprehensive KnowledgeBase in the industry, customers have increased confidence in the code analysis results versus competitive offerings.

“Enhancements to the Protex 5.1 module of the Black Duck Suite significantly improve productivity and speed of analysis,” said Bill McQuaide, EVP of Products and Strategy, Black Duck Software. “Unlike other code analysis tools, the Suite can quickly search and analyze enterprise-scale code bases comprised of hundreds of megabytes of code. For our enterprise customers - the majority of whom have chosen the Black Duck Suite - the performance and search support enhancements provide a distinct competitive advantage.”
Black Duck Software Awarded Patent for Core Technology That Automatically Resolves Software License Obligations and Conflicts

Black Duck Software Awarded Patent for Core Technology That Automatically Resolves Software License Obligations and Conflicts

Black Duck Suite examines code, mitigates risk and ensures compliance, making open source easier to use

WALTHAM, Mass., February 2, 2010 - Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software, has been granted a patent protecting core technology that can automatically identify license obligations and resolve license conflicts for legally-protectable content (e.g. software, multimedia, video, audio, textual representations, works of art, visual representations, technological know-how, business know-how, contract rights, and/or software elements, etc.).

US Patent No. US 7,552,093 B2 covers technology at the heart of the Black Duck Suite, a comprehensive management platform for controlling the use of open source in a multi-source development process. The patented technology allows the Black Duck Suite to scan an organization’s code base of open and closed-source software components using various licenses to determine which license obligations are in effect and which licenses obligations may be in conflict.

With this patent, the Black Duck Suite goes beyond competitive offerings, scanning code according to license attributes, restrictions, uses and interactions against the Black Duck KnowledgeBase of hundreds of thousands of open source projects, which use more than 1,800 open source licenses. The Suite provides development organizations with tools that effectively automate the search, selection and compliant integration of open source components, making the low-cost economics of open source available at enterprise scale.

“This patent represents core technology in the pioneering Black Duck application,” said Bill McQuaide, EVP of Products and Strategy, Black Duck Software. “In these difficult times more and more customers are turning to multi-source development using OSS to stretch resources. Open source components are free but all come with license obligations that need to be met,” added McQuaide. “Customers are building new apps and services with dozens or hundreds of components. Black Duck’s technology enables organizations to ‘design in’ compliance and eliminate or minimize potential human error in manual license checking, saving time and money and mitigating legal risk and exposure from unmet license obligations.”

The patented technology is especially powerful when used in large-scale development projects, where customers build applications from dozens or hundreds of components. As enterprises using multi-source development with open source software create software products, applications, and services by combining smaller building blocks of software - each of which may have its own unique license obligations - the Black Duck Suite automatically compares license obligations, identifies conflicts between the sub-components, and automatically suggests license alternatives.

Black Duck Software Names Open Source Rookies of 2009

Black Duck Software Names Open Source Rookies of 2009

New Projects reflect the breadth of open source innovation in Cloud computing, Gaming, Health Care, Mobile

WALTHAM, Mass., January 19, 2010, — From a Twitter client for World of Warcraft to a natural language processing system for the clinical health care community, open source projects have the answer to an increasing range of development challenges, according to Black Duck Software, which today announced its 2009 open source ‘Rookies of the Year’ list.

Working from a list of over 19,000 new projects launched in 2009, Black Duck evaluated project popularity using a scoring system that awards points for the number of releases within a project, the number of developers involved, and the number of web sites linked to the project. After auditing its findings and normalizing scores, Black Duck determined the top 10 Rookie projects.

Spanning mobile, healthcare, cloud computing, gaming and social media/collaboration, the Rookies exemplify the flexibility - and time-to-market advantage - of open source.

The Black Duck Rookies of the Year for 2009 include:

Live Android - for those who want to try Android without buying a phone, Live Android lets the user run Android on his or her PC without affecting other files.

Open Health Natural Language Processing - developed by the Mayo Clinic and IBM, the project gives medical clinicians and researchers access to unstructured textual documents (e.g., pathology reports, clinical notes, etc.)

Mobile Browser Definition File - provides all the information needed to adaptively render content for mobile phones and devices, presenting server applications with a set of 67 capabilities or properties - from screen size to cookie support - to describe a mobile client device.

Redis (REmote Dictionary Server) - An advanced key-store database which supports very fast, persistent access to a dataset. A simple way of storing data and a concept that can scale to the cloud.

Smasher - Audio loop slicer designed to create striking effects from WAV, MP3, FLAC or AIFF files in seconds without a sequencer. Effects include filter sweeps, phasing, flanging, delay, and distortion.

AbiCloud - Infrastructure software for the creation and integral management of public and private clouds based on heterogeneous environments. The project aims to offer users a tool with the capacity for scaling, management, automatic and immediate provision of servers, storage, networks, and virtual network devices, as well as applications.

Transdroid - Remote torrent client for Android that supports faster downloads of large video, audio or software files.

Rainmeter - This customizable PC resource meter can display various performance data in different formats. Rainmeter can measure CPU load, allocated memory, network traffic, performance data, uptime, free disk space, and more.

TweetCraft - This World of Warcraft add-on enables players to send and receive tweets using Twitter without leaving the game; automatically upload and post screenshots using TwitPic (shares photos on Twitter) and automatically tweet certain in-game events such as achievements.

Native Client - Runs x86 native code in web applications, with the goal of ensuring browser neutrality, OS portability, and safety.

“The Rookies of the Year projects represent some of the hottest areas in software – cloud, gaming, mobile, healthcare – and open source at its best, communities identifying problems and developing solutions in an open, collaborative process,” said Peter Vescuso, Executive Vice President, Black Duck Software. “ Some of the projects are niche and others are well-known, but all represent the broadening innovation and influence of open source software.”

Black Duck also identified five Honorable Mention projects lead by Android. Read more about these projects at the Black Duck blog: http://blog.blackducksoftware.com/?p=571.
