Open Source for America Welcomes Black Duck Software as Its Latest Member in Advocating Open Source in the U.S. Federal Government

WALTHAM, Mass., July 22, 2009-- Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software, announced today that it has joined Open Source for America, a broad cross-section of more than 50 companies, academic institutions, communities, related groups and individuals that serve as a unified voice for the promotion of open source in the U.S. Federal government sector. Open Source for America strives to effect change in government to encourage broader support of open source technologies and the open source development community.

“We've received great response from companies, organizations and individuals interested in joining together to advocate for greater use of open source software in the U.S. federal government,” said David Thomas, principal at Mehlman Vogel Castagnetti and spokesman for the Open Source for America campaign. “We are very pleased to welcome Black Duck Software in joining our cause and look forward to their active involvement in articulating the true value open source delivers to the U.S. government.”

Black Duck Software is the creator of the Black Duck Suite, a comprehensive management platform that brings automation and efficiency to software development organizations using open source components at significant scale for software development. Black Duck spiders the Internet collecting information on over 200,000 open source projects and other downloadable code into a database it calls the Black Duck KnowledgeBase, which is the foundation for the Suite. The company recently identified nearly 800 health care open source projects in the KnowledgeBase. Black Duck estimates that these projects represent $6 billion USD of software development cost and offer a significant potential stimulus resource available to the healthcare industry. Black Duck also maintains Koders.com, an open source code search engine it makes freely available to the software development community.

“Black Duck Software is proud to be a founding member of Open Source for America,” said Timothy Yeaton, president and CEO, Black Duck Software. “Open source software is a tremendous resource for development organizations seeking immediate, practical ways to accelerate application development. As an advocate of the use of open source software, Black Duck encourages broader U.S. federal support of and participation in the open source community.”

As a member of Open Source for America, Black Duck Software has pledged to support the organization's mission and its founding principles. This includes the belief that the U.S. federal government can and should become more transparent, participatory, secure and efficient by leveraging the advantages of open source software; the open source community can drive collaborative innovation for government; and the decision to use software should be driven solely by the requirements of the user.
