Black Duck Software Continues Rapid Growth, Closes 2008 with Substantial Gains
Year-over-Year Bookings Surge 42%
WALTHAM, Mass., January 27, 2009 - Bucking industry trends and an uncertain economy, Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software, today announced substantial, continued growth marked by a year-over-year gain of 42 percent in bookings.
Although the greater economy suffered steep losses in 2008, the company maintained its pace across all key business sectors, acquiring customers such as mobile industry consortium The LiMo Foundation and Sagem Mobiles, a provider of mobile phones and accessories.
Black Duck helps its customers’ development organizations improve efficiency and accelerate time-to-market using a hybrid development process that combines open source software with internally-developed and third-party code. Black Duck solutions accelerate time-to-market for customers by enabling the reuse of open source software while mitigating associated legal, security and management challenges.
“Black Duck products and services support the hybrid development process software developers are using to stay competitive, manage resources and reduce cost and risk,” said Kenneth Goldman, executive vice president and chief financial officer. “We attribute much of our growth and success during such challenging economic times to Black Duck’s core value proposition – giving our customers the solutions they need to stretch resources, remain competitive and prepare for the future.”
Fiscal year 2008 year-end successes include:
- Tremendous growth despite economic crisis. Fiscal year 2008 saw product bookings surge 42 percent year-over-year against 2007. The company’s subscription and professional services business remained strong, with services posting growth of 65 percent for the year.
- International expansion. Black Duck continued its international expansion in Asia/PAC and EMEA. The company, which operates offices in 18 countries, opened offices in Japan, Germany and France, added service personnel in Hong Kong to support growth in China. The company also has signed new resellers in Europe, notably LINAGORA, France's leading open source software and services company.
- New customer growth. The company added 28 new customers to its roster in Q4 ending the year with more than 620 customers. New customers reflect strength in the mobile and telecommunications sectors.
- Significant enhancements to Koders.com. Black Duck acquired Koders.com, an open source code search engine, in April. Black Duck has enhanced the web property, increasing the size of the search engine’s database by a third to over 1.3 billion lines of code governed by open source and other licenses.
