Black Duck Solidifies Leadership as International Provider of Solutions to Accelerate Software Development by Managing Proper Use of Code

Company Achieves Record Customer Growth in 2007

WALTHAM, Mass., January 14, 2008—Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of software component management solutions, today announced record customer growth in 2007, demonstrating its continued market leadership in providing solutions that enable customers to safely use open source and third-party code components while managing their software licensing obligations and mitigating business risks. Black Duck now has more than 575 customers, including recent additions of NEC, Citrix, IONA Technologies, Lehman Brothers and QNX.

With the launch of protexIP in 2003, Black Duck introduced the best practice of managed software component reuse, enabling today’s state of the art development model, the assembly of software by safely combining home-grown code with open source and third party components. By using protexIP to manage component reuse within a software development life cycle, Black Duck customers produce better quality software, reduce development and maintenance costs, and speed time-to-market.

Black Duck achieved a number of milestones in 2007. The company witnessed a 78 percent increase in customer bookings from Q3 to Q4, including 93 percent year-over-year growth internationally. Worldwide, Black Duck added more than 240 new customers during the year. Additionally, Black Duck contributed to several industry initiatives on software licensing and code reuse. Among other activities, company executives participated on committees contributing to the newest version of the GNU General Public License, GPLv3, which was finalized during the summer.

“Black Duck’s growth demonstrates that the company has extended its leadership position—a position we have had since our founding—in the market for open source component management,” said Robert Lapides, executive vice president of field operations at Black Duck Software. “The success we have seen is the result of many factors, including the commitment of our employees, our focus on customer success, and the vision we have for how our technology can improve how applications are developed, deployed and sold.”
