NEC and Black Duck Software Partner to Offer Software Component Management Solutions in Japan

NEC resells Black Duck protexIP through its Japanese sales force and provides related services to help ensure compliance with open source and third party licenses

TOKYO and WALTHAM, Mass.—November 19, 2007—NEC Corporation and Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of software component management solutions, today announced an agreement that allows NEC to resell Black Duck’s flagship product, protexIP™. protexIP is used to uncover open source and other third-party code unknowingly embedded in software applications allowing software development teams to comply with license provisions that can be confusing or conflicting. NEC will sell protexIP in Japan through its own sales force, as well as provide solutions that its consultants develop for NEC customers upon experience its own use of protexIP.

Black Duck protexIP helps enterprises, software development organizations and consultants rapidly and safely develop and deliver software through managed reuse of open source and third party components. Black Duck designed protexIP to assist companies in managing component-based development – today’s dominant approach to software development that relies not only on internally developed code, but also on a mix of open source and third-party assets. With protexIP, companies confidently address the intellectual property obligations associated with mixed-source development programs and steer clear of potential license related problems. The product highlights discrepancies between business policies and intellectual property usage and provides a seamless, enterprise-wide framework for resolving issues, thus helping customers avoid costly legal difficulties or product delays.

“Black Duck Software is honored to be selected by NEC, first for use within the company on its own projects, and now as part of license management solutions for NEC customers and for resale by NEC’s world-class sales force,” said Alan Facey, Executive Vice President of International Operations for Black Duck Software. “Black Duck has had a presence in Asia for a number of years and this partnership agreement marks a substantial step forward for the company and our work in Japan.”

Mr. Kotetsu Omiya, General Manager of the OSS Platform Development Division at NEC Corporation said: “Black Duck Software’s protexIP system simplifies every aspect of the otherwise daunting and time consuming process of software development by automating component approval within customers’ software. At NEC itself, protexIP has helped our software engineers significantly at each product development step. We’re pleased to now offer protexIP through our consulting services and to NEC customers.”

NEC presented protexIP as part of is solution services at the Embedded Technology conference in Yokohama, Japan, from November 14-16.
