Black Duck Software Announces Integration of protexIPTM Software Compliance Management Solution with IBM Rational ClearCase
Automated Black Duck Analysis of Source Code Within IBM Rational ClearCase: Identifies License Conflicts With Plans for Reporting up Through Rational Portfolio Manager
Orlando, Fla. (IBM Rational Software Developer Conference), June 5, 2006 -- Black Duck Software, a leading provider of software compliance management solutions, today announced integration between its market-leading protexIPTM software compliance management solution with IBM Rational® ClearCase®. Organizations using Rational ClearCase will be able to leverage the automated source code analysis capabilities of protexIP to ensure compliance with the varying and often complex licensing requirements and obligations associated with open source and 3 rd party software. The integration, which has achieved Ready for IBM Rational software validation, provides the ability for project "views" within Rational ClearCase to be quickly and easily analyzed within the protexIP environment. Additionally Black Duck intends to deliver executive-level tracking and reporting in the future through integration with IBM Rational Portfolio Manager on the compliance, IP and governance issues discovered within the protexIP analysis.
Black Duck will demonstrate the integration at its booth at the IBM Rational Software Development Conference. Also at the conference, on Monday, June 5 at 1:30 p.m., Palle Pedersen, chief technology officer of Black Duck, will speak on the topic of "Building a Strong Software Business on Open Source."
Black Duck's protexIP platform helps to ensure the effective management of software licensing policies and procedures throughout the enterprise. It creates a unique, collaborative environment for developers, legal counsel and management. The protexIP KnowledgeBase contains information on millions of lines of code, more than five hundred open source licenses and virtually all open source projects. Rational ClearCase provides lifecycle management and control of software development assets. It is designed to be used across development teams to create, update, build, deliver, reuse and maintain software assets.
Integration between protexIP and Rational ClearCase will allow customers to perform automated source code and binary analysis within their development environments as part of regularly scheduled builds or within the Quality Assurance process. By empowering customers with the ability to discover licensing issues early in the development process rather than at product release, protexIP reduces time to market and costly rework.
"Enterprises today are challenged with regulatory compliance of the software development process," said Michael Loria, vice president of business development, Rational Software, IBM. "The integration between Rational ClearCase and Black Duck's protexIPTM platform provides enterprises the ability to identify and manage the compliance, IP and governance risks associated with improperly licensed OSS and 3rd party source code."
"Application developers are under tremendous pressure to deliver stellar code on aggressive deadlines," said Chris MacKenzie, vice president of marketing for Black Duck Software. "This constant requirement, along with the industry-wide trend toward component-based development, increases the likelihood of infringements of open source software licenses. Many companies understand the legal issues that accompany such violations and are putting in place policies and procedures that bring together developers, management and legal counsel to devise a solution. The integration announced today means that the thousands of businesses that use Rational ClearCase to govern development can readily add protexIP to take full control of software assets."
