Open Source - Friend or Foe?

Open Source - Friend or Foe?

15 May, Kingsley Napley LLP, London

The undoubted benefits of Open Source Software (OSS) come at a price. The aim of this seminar is to bring forth the legal, technical and commercial implications of open source in relation to software development, M&A and exit - and to discuss whether there is any genuine alternative or a way to manage these issues effectively.

Andy Knapp, European Sales Director at Black Duck Software, will be reviewing the current trends in open source software, comparing both automated and manual approaches to compliance and discussing a case study on how open source software is used for competitive advantage.

Simon Halberstam, Technology Partner at Kingsley Napley, will elaborate on the legal aspects of the open source usage conundrum. In particular, he will focus on the inherent conflict between economies of scale and time achieved through use of open source on the one hand and the possibility of losing proprietary rights which the governing licences such as GPL2 can entail.
